"Sunflower Bliss" by Martha Kisling

SUNFLOWER BLISS
Original Watercolor on gessoed paper

Last week in my Wednesday night class we painted with watercolor on gessoed paper. The white gesso creates a slick surface to paint on, allowing the watercolor to slip and slide around creating glowing color and interesting texture.

"Iris Spendor" by Martha Kisling

IRIS SPLENDOR
Original Watercolor on gesso - 11x15

I always tell my students to never throw away any of their paintings. If you don't like what you did, paint on the other side, if you don't like that, you can apply a couple coats of white gesso over it and have a whole new surface to paint on. The gesso gives you a slick surface causing the watercolor to sit on top, creating interesting runs, shapes and textures. You can also lift the paint off at any time to create highlights, change a shape and regain your whites.
