A PAIR OF PEARS by Colorado Artist Martha Kisling

A PAIR OF PEARS
Watercolor 8x10

I had so much fun with this painting - choosing an unusual color scheme, adding oil pastel, creating texture with salt, using a stamp for the suggestion of writing and finally putting it all together to create a unique compostion. The joys of being an artist!

SINGLE ROSE by Colorado Artist Martha Kisling

SINGLE ROSE
Watercolor 8x10
I love to paint a large, single flower where I can focus in on the fine details of the petals and also create a dramatic composition. I first lightly sketched in the rose and then wet the paper to paint in the background, adding some spatters of pink and green. I painted the petals after the paper was dry and enhanced areas of the back ground around the rose.
Single Rose is one of several smaller paintings that can be found on my Auction page at Daily Paintworks here

"Garden Bouquet" - Watercolor on Gesso by Martha Kisling

GARDEN BOUQUET
Original Watercolor on Gesso - 11x15

Painterly is defined as having visible brush strokes, the result of applying paint in a less than completely controlled manner, generally without closely following carefully drawn lines. It is a little more challenging to paint this way with watercolor but I have found that if I coat the paper with white gesso first to create a slick surface, it allows the brushwork to show and creates interesting drips and runs, giving that painterly effect.

"Yellow Rose" - Watercolor by Martha Kisling

YELLOW ROSE
Original Watercolor - 8x10

Last week when I announced to my students that we would be painting roses they did not even try to quiet their moans and groans. Roses are such a perfect flower that they can be challenging to paint but with practice and an open mind you will learn enjoy the process and be happy with your results - I promise!

"Winter Rose" - Watercolor Collage by Martha Kisling

WINTER ROSE
Watermedia Collage - 8x10

Sometimes it is fun to experiment with different media so I decided to try using some acrylics in a manner similar to my watercolors, then I added some collage and then went back to my watercolors. To see this painting in progress click here.

"Stars of Summer" by Martha Kisling

STARS OF SUMMER
Original Watercolor - 11x15

As most of you know I LOVE painting sunflowers - you can have so much creative fun with their overall shape, big centers and crazy petals. For Stars of Summer I began with wet paper and randomly applied color all over. When everything was dry I began defining the flowers by painting around the shapes (negative painting) and then added more definition to the sunflower centers and petals. A bright, happy painting to remind us all about summer.

"Fall Leaves" by Martha Kisling

FALL LEAVES
Original Watercolor - 11x15
SOLD

I love this time of year when there is a hint of fall in the air - crisp, cool nights, leaves changing colors and pumpkins for sale at the grocery store. When I painted Fall Leaves I used real leaves to stamp shapes on the paper and then added other leaf shapes and details around them. This has always been one of my favorite paintings and it now lives happily with Charlotte in Virginia.

"Sunflower Bliss" by Martha Kisling

SUNFLOWER BLISS
Original Watercolor on gessoed paper

Last week in my Wednesday night class we painted with watercolor on gessoed paper. The white gesso creates a slick surface to paint on, allowing the watercolor to slip and slide around creating glowing color and interesting texture.

"Southwestern Pots" - Watercolor Batik by Martha Kisling

SOUTHWESTERN POTS
Original Watercolor Batik - 15x21

If you subscribe to my newsletter you already got a sneak peek at this watercolor batik of southwestern pottery and blankets. The fibers in the rice paper and the batik technique lend itself perfectly to the aged look of the subject matter - I also love how all the wax drips and spatters add a feel of texture.

"Bouquet of Love" by Martha Kisling

BOUQUET OF LOVE
Original Watercolor - 8x10

This is another of my smaller paintings where I could be very loose and free in my approach to a traditional subject of flowers in a vase. Nothing says love like a gift of flowers!
