The Burrowing Owl is a very small ground dwelling owl. I was really surprised when I saw them. I thought they would be bigger but they only stand about 6-8 inches tall. They live in small burrows int he ground much like prairie dogs. They scurry around the ground and if a predator gets close they rapidly run down into the hole. This little guy was a delight to watch. I went with a friend to a place in Cape Coral which is known for protecting these endangered owls. He came out of the burrow and started to stretch his wings. I had such a great time that day and hope to do more paintings of these delightful little owls! This listing is for an original watercolor. It is on Fabriano 140 lb watercolor paper.

The Mangrove Swallow ( Tachycineta albilinea) is commonly found by lakes, rivers, lagoons and marshes. It can be seen flying rapidly low over the waterways as it hunts for insects. The Spectacle Owl , Pulsatrix perspicillata is the first owl I ever saw in the wild. I was walking in the rainforest on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica when suddenly I felt as if I was being watched. I looked around and didn't see anything, until I looked up. The gaze of an owl staring at you is piercing. I stopped dead in my tracks and watched this magnificent raptor. I will never forget that moment. This painting was done from a rescued owl at the Toucan Rescue Ranch. They rehabilitate all rainforest birds found in Costa Rica.

They have all the Neo-Tropical Owls and when possible the birds are released back into the wild. This listing is for an original colored pencil and PanPastel paintings on Stonehenge Kraft Paper. It is unframed. 25% of the sale will go towards donating funds to the Toucan Rescue Ranch.

The Regal Walnut Moth has the most stunning caterpillar called the Hickory Horned Devil. The caterpillar can be as long as 8 inches and comes in different colors: a brown version and a green version. It pupates underground by burrowing into the dirt. The host plant is the Black Walnut Tree. I was able to raise these moths when I lived in New Jersey. They were super COOL!
