"The Elephant Watches" by Terry Honstead

This 18 x 22 watercolor on 300 lb paper was done in layers using masking and then painting the entire sheet with a watercolor wash and then repeating the process until the very darkest layer is finally done.    When I took of the masking that kept the layers from getting darker, it did pull of some of the color so I did have a lot of painting to do when I thought I would be done.  I also had to lighten the background areas because they were still too dark!  Anyway, I learned a lot and may try this technique again.  Interested parties can see more at my website terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com or email me at

"Kinsley" by Terry Hosntead

I worked on this painting all day yesterday.  It is coming along, but needs a lot more darks.  I haven't even started her clothing yet because I do not know what color I am going to make it.  In the actual picture that I have, her outfit was a really pale pink, but that wouldn't show up so well in the painting.  I am thinking maybe to go with a burgundy or red of some sort.  I also need to put in a lot more darks.

"He Loves Me" by Terry Honstead

This 11 x 7 painting was done with one that I had started during a class that I was teaching on beginning mixed media.  I played around adding the different shapes to it and when I got that so that I liked it, I decided it needed flowers as well.  When I got the coneflowers painted onto it, I was happy with the result and did not want to ruin it by attempting to add anything else.  I like the simpleness of it.  If you wish to purchase a copy, you can find it on  terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com, or you may email me at:  honstead@paulbunyan.net.

Behind Her Back by Terry Honstead

This was a fun picture to paint.  I got it from an old photograph that was black and white.  To me, these women seem to be snickering about the girl in the backless dress.  Apparently those were not the norm around there in those days!  I wonder what all these ladies would think about today's dress?  Well, actually they are probably still around and not liking it much at all!  (Just a guess!)  If you would like to see more of my work, check out:   terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com, or email me at:  honstead@paulbunyan.net.

The Prophet by Terry Honstead

I apologize for not posting for a while!  My computer cord was on the fritz so I was without for a while!  And now we are getting ready to go on vacation for a couple of weeks, so just in case I don't get a chance to post again, I will be back right after Easter at the latest!  This still life was fun to do.  I started out not liking how it was looking but the more I got done, the better I liked it.  And what could be better but lace, old books and a candle?   Hope you like it!  If you are looking for more of my paintings, they can be seen at terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ and as always I would love to hear from you.  My email is honstead@paulbunyan.net.

"Two Grandmas" by Terry Honstead

Two Grandmas is a watercolor done on 300 lb hot press Arches paper, which is my favorite for portraits.    It is 14 x 11 in.  The picture that I used as a reference for this piece was taken at my grandson's 4th birthday party.  This is his "Gray Grandma" and his "Black Grandma".  The Gray Grandma is my mother.  I really felt a lot of emotion when I took this picture and every time I look at it.  Not sure why except that it represents our multiracial family.  Any questions could be sent to:    honstead@paulbunyan.net.

"Tranquility" by Terry Honstead

Tranquility is on a 30 x 22 sheet of Arches Watercolor Paper.  I may decide later to darken the trees, but for now it is done.  I always have to look at paintings for a few days before I know if it is actually done or not.  I won't know until I finish that process, but for now, it is done.  If you are interested you can see more of my work at:terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ or email me at:  honstead@paulbunyan.net.

Beach Combing by Terry Honstead

I wanted to do this painting of my grandson because my mind has been on our upcoming trip to FL.  I can hardly wait and this painting represents everything good about being at the beach!  It is a 5 x 7 and I plan on entering it in the Artists of MN Spring Show for the mini.  If you are interested in this or any of my work you can see more at http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ or email me at:honstead@paulbunyan.net.

"Water, Water" by Terry Honstead

This one is done. I fell in love with this picture!  The hardest and last part that I did was the shadow coming from the left side falling at an angle toward the water spigot.  I am still not real sure that I shouldn’t have done this in oil, but I guess I could still do it that way if I decide to sometime! If you are interested in seeing this or more, please go to http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ or email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net.

Christmas Warmth by Terry Honstead

I am going to say this is done.  I am not 100% certain that I won't decide to add something to it however!    But for now, this is how I am leaving it.  This is a 23 x 15 inch watercolor on 300 lb Arches Watercolor paper.  I will have cards made from it next year.  It is basically how our house looks at Christmas!   If you are interested in prints or cards you can find them on http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/.   Or for the original email me at:  honstead@paulbunyan.net.

Sunlight Through the Pines by Terry Honstead

This painting was actually one that I did in a Karlyn Holman class.  I used a lot of different techniques on this painting and it was a lot of fun to try them out!  I have already sold the original and several prints.  I think the reason that everyone likes this one is because it looks just about like everyone's backyard around here!  If you are interested in a print, you can find one at http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/terry=honstead.html

"Geometric Flowers" by Terry Honstead

This 20 x 20 watercolor on paper was done in a Karlyn Holman class.  I have been wanting to do something similar for a long time now using the geometric shapes in the background.  I like the way the shapes sometimes come forward and sometimes recede depending on wether or not they are darker or lighter on a certain edge.  If anyone is interested in purchasing this, they can go to   http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ or email me at:  honstead@paulbunyan.net.  I plan on doing similar paintings in the near future!

"T.V. 2011" by Terry Honstead

This 11 x 15 watercolor is on 300 lb hot press paper.  It was a fun painting of my grandson, done at a Karlyn Holman class.  This was my first try on hot press paper which is much smoother than the cold press that I usually use!  If anyone is interested in having me do a commissioned portrait, they can email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net.

To Swim or To Fish? That is the Question! by Terry Honstead

This is a 12 x 16 watercolor of two boys.  One loves to fish and the other loves to swim!  This day, they were doing both at the same time in the same place!  It is part of a series of paintings about boys fishing.  If you are interested in purchasing the original or a print, or would like to see more, please go to:  http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ or email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net

"Wine Closet" by Terry Honstead

This is one of the hardest, most tedious watercolor paintings that I have done.  It took me forever and there were many times I thought about quitting, but I am happy that I stuck it out.  I am very happy with how it turned out.  It is a 20 x 28 in watercolor on Arches 140 lb. paper.  If you are interested please email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net.
